Welcome to the exciting world of Artificial Intelligence. Today, we’re starting a journey to learn how to talk to computers that can think. The special way we talk to them is called Prompt Engineering.
What is a “Prompt”?
Imagine you have a super-smart robot friend. To get your friend to do something, you have to give it instructions. A prompt is simply an instruction you give to an AI.
It can be a question, a command, or even just a few words to get the AI started.
Simple Prompt Examples
You could ask an AI:
"What is the capital of France?"
"Tell me a joke."
"Write a short story about a friendly dragon."
Each of these is a prompt. You are prompting (or asking) the AI to give you a response.
So, What is Prompt Engineering?
Prompt Engineering is the skill of creating really good prompts to get the best possible answers from an AI.
Think of it like this: if you ask a vague question, you’ll get a vague answer. If you ask a smart, detailed question, you’ll get a smart, detailed answer.
Prompt Engineering is the art and science of asking the right questions in the right way.
Why is it Important?
Learning to write good prompts is like learning a new superpower. It allows you to:
- Get accurate information quickly.
- Create amazing things, like stories, poems, and even computer code.
- Solve problems and brainstorm new ideas.
- Translate languages.
The better your prompts, the more helpful the AI will be.

Example: Vague vs. Good Prompt
Let’s see the difference a good prompt makes.
Vague Prompt:Tell me about dogs.
The AI might give you a very long, general article about the history of dogs. But what if you just wanted to know about good pets?
Good, Engineered Prompt:List three dog breeds that are good for families with small children and live well in apartments.
This prompt is specific. It tells the AI exactly what you want: a list, three breeds, the type of family, and the living situation. The answer will be much more useful!
Prompt Template:
[Explain/Describe/Summarize] [topic] for [audience] in [style/length]
Key Takeaways from Lecture 01
- A Prompt is an instruction or question you give to an AI.
- Prompt Engineering is the skill of designing effective prompts.
- The goal is to get the most accurate, relevant, and useful response from the AI.
- Being clear and specific is the most important first step.
